The Effects of THCA Wax on Cannabinoid Recovery

THCA Wax is one of the more potent cannabis concentrates available to users today. Due to its high THCA potency (often exceeding 99%) and vivid flavors, THCA wax has become a favorite among consumers. It is also very versatile and can be consumed in various ways. It can be added to flower, smoked from a dab rig or an oil bong, and also vaped. The results of the experiment displayed a clear positive relationship between solvent addition and cannabinoid recovery for both waxes A and B. This was expected as higher levels of solvent are employed during recrystallisation and thus increase the amount of cannabinoid that is dissolved before solubility limits are reached. In addition, the use of higher solvent volumes increases solvent entrainment into the cannabinoid containing filtrate and decreases wax carry-over.

In order to maximise cannabinoid recovery, it is recommended that the DR and WR values be optimised to minimise losses during the extraction process. This can be achieved by adjusting the amounts of solvent employed during the initial dilution and heating steps as well as during the washing of the recrystallised wax. It was also found that using a multi-stage extract improved cannabinoid recovery. It is however important to ensure that the final filtered wax has low lipophilic contaminants and that the concentration of solvent in the filtered wax is low.
