Getting an Apostille For a Divorce Decree

If you are going to present a divorce decree in another country or in an embassy of your home country you will probably need to get the document authenticated. This process is called getting an apostille for the document.

An apostille for divorce decree is a special stamp of authentication issued by a state. In the State of New York apostilles are processed by the County Clerk’s Notary Desk (60 Centre Street, Room 141B, New York, NY 10007). The apostille certifies the authenticity of the signature and seal of the County Clerk or State official that signed the public document that is to be used overseas. This is the only step needed for a document to be used in a country that is part of the 1961 Hague Convention.

Apostille for Divorce Decree: Required Steps and Documentation

For documents that will be used in non-member countries of the Hague Convention additional steps are required. This may include certification by the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C. and/or legalization by the embassy or consulate office in the country of destination.
