A podiatrist is a doctor who specializes in the study of the human foot, ankle and lower leg anatomy and has a specialized area of training known as podiatry. Most podiatrists can perform all kinds of foot care related to the foot and ankle and are highly trained to diagnose and treat painful foot conditions. There are many different podiatry techniques including arthroscopic surgery, plantar fasciitis and adductor Reiki to name a few. Other podiatry practices include calendaring, which involve the use of ultrasound for local anesthesia to reduce swelling, and orthopedic foot care, which are focused on providing non-invasive treatment to patients with musculoskeletal problems such as bunions, corns and calluses on the feet and ankles.

To become a certified Podiatrist in New York you have to complete a two-year residency at a Podiatry Clinic. In order to apply for a Podiatry residency program at a Podiatry clinic you will need to complete a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college and pass a final exam of either a Podiatry Institute or American Podiatric Medical Association. Once you have completed your undergraduate degree, you will need to complete a 4-year Master’s degree from a Podiatry School that is approved by the American Podiatric Medical Association. Once you have received your undergraduate degree you can look for employment at a Podiatry Clinic or any other Podiatry clinic in the country. There are specific programs that are offered for those who are interested in becoming full time Podiatrists while others only offer a one or two year residency for Podiatrists who want to conduct specialized research in their field or are looking to become full-time faculty members at a Podiatry School.
After completing your residency at a Podiatry Clinic you will need to obtain a Masters Degree in Physiology or Dermatology to specialize in your chosen specialty. At a podiatry clinic you will be fully trained in all facets of your practice including diagnosis, treatment and prevention of foot and ankle deformities. You will be able to diagnose most musculoskeletal problems and prescribe a course of treatment for most deformities. Your coursework will include the study of diagnostic imaging procedures such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT) scanner systems, and magnetic resonance imaging computed tomography (MRI) technology. You will learn how to properly use these diagnostic tools and how to perform effective and safe patient management. You will also learn how to make full use of diagnostic films and evaluate various diagnostic findings.
