Eight childhood friends, three University of Michigan grads, one bachelor party campfire, and one big idea. That’s how Metro Detroit Distillery, creator of small-batch artisanal whiskey, gin and vodka, got its start. Now co-owner Michael Forsyth and his partners are turning their focus to community.
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, frontline service workers across the region were facing critical shortages of personal protective equipment (PPE) — especially hand sanitizer. The distillery knew they could help. They quickly adapted their manufacturing process to produce large volumes of the product, and reached out to Pure Michigan Business Connect (PMBC) for help getting it into the hands of people who needed it most.
Cocktail Creations: How to Use Weiss Distilling Co. Spirits in Your Mixology
The team at PMBC connected Weiss with organizations that placed PPE orders through our COVID-19 Procurement Platform, and the distillery was able to provide more than 21,000 gallons of hand sanitizer to hospitals, municipalities and other essential services. Forsyth credits the team at PMBC for helping his company get the job done much sooner than it would have otherwise.
In addition to their growing line of spirits, Weiss also hosts a unique cocktail bar in the historic Whiskey Factory in Downtown Clawson. The 5,000-square foot space combines a modern event venue and rickhouse with the ambiance of an old-school distillery. The smell of grain and the shine of copper stills envelop guests in a sense of heritage when they walk through the front doors of this urban two-story distillery.
